1. Corporate Personhood
- the Abolish Corporate Personhood / Amend the Constitution group requests that the Education group do an education component / ‘teach-in’ for the Jan. 21 event (second anniversary of Citizens United vs. FEC); NOTE: overall organization for the Jan. 21 event (including street theater, festival, busking group, etc) will be done by a different group of people; this group is only being asked to organize the education component of that event
- confusion: are we doing a teach-in on Jan. 14th during the SYRCL film fest, or on the 21st during the larger event? Clarification: we could do both
- CONSENSUS: yes we will organize ‘teach-ins’ for the 14th (during SYRCL film fest) and/or the 21st (during larger event observing second anniversary of CU vs FEC)
- James summarized notes from the Jan. 19 (Monday) Amend meeting
- local Tea Party has been invited to participate in some way, possibly a future panel discussion on the amend / abolish topic (invitation was not for a specific date, so there is leeway in planning)
- Janine could do outreach to other parties (including the new ‘Justice’ party)
- consider inviting people from other political parties to house parties on the amend topic, to gain input from other views right from the start
- for the 14th/21st, general discussion from different political parties seems too broad; we need to stay focused on a specific question (i.e. abolish corporate personhood)
- possibly too early for a public panel discussion - could be counterproductive
- there are other good models for getting people of different views to sit down and find common ground
- suggestion: don’t dilute our message with partisan politics at public events on or before Jan 21
- suggestion: collect feedback on “how is the topic of corporate personhood important to you?” at the teach-in event(s)
- suggestion: make sure to include the message of “here’s what you can do about it” at the 14th/21st events
- CONSENSUS: general timeline for Jan. 21 teach-in: we will commit to around 2 hours
- SHARON: CU vs. FEC; movement to Amend (50 minutes)
- TOM: summary of nation-wide amend-related actions to date (5 min.)
- MIA and JED: large timeline / history / effects of corporate personhood (30 min.)
